This fruit contains amino acids called citrulline that can boost the activity of an enzyme that dilates blood vessels in the penis, resulting in an erection. Many studies report benefits of citrulline for the cardiovascular (1) (2) system and increase in sex drive. Watermelon has a good amount of potassium and magnesium and it may also explain why this red fruit may keep blood pressure in track.

Recent research, colours and watermelon

A group of Italian researchers discovered that citrulline supplementation improved erection hardness in men with mild erectile dysfunction (3). Furthermore, this “sexual” amino acid increased intercourse frequency almost 70% in a month. Supplementation given for this study was the equivalent of 5 servings of red watermelon. Colour matters. Remarkably yellow watermelon has four times more citrulline (4).

Watermelon has more goodness in its seeds. They are a good source of antioxidants, similar to any berries. Also watermelon is very rich in carotenoids antioxidant, responsible for its colour, which helps to keep strong and healthy heart. Lycopene benefits heart health by reducing inflammation and improving blood lipid levels. Furthermore some studies show that this red fruit can help balance cholesterol and improve systolic blood pressure in patients with hypertension (5).
